We’re going to start at the beginning. An option is basically a right to buy or sell a certain number of shares of an individual stock, at a certain date, at a set price. I know that sounds a bit complicated right now, but it will become much easier to grasp once you’ve become more familiar with it.
So, an option is a security based off of, or derived from another security (in our case, individual stocks). It’s value (or price) at any given time is based primarily on the price of the individual stock it covers.
